Listening to music is an activity that we can do to relax and relieve stress. It is a form of entertainment that we enjoy so much. Though different people have unique music preferences, it is a fact that music is a universal language. Whatever is your ethnic background is, whether you're blonde or a brunette, whether you're a man or a woman, you still listen to music. And if not, you can just go to hell because you're an abnormal. There is no doubt that modern technology revolutionized the music industry. From tapes, to compact disks, now we have MP3 players that we can use to download our favorite songs from the internet. And what's amazing is that you can do it in a blink of an eye. That's how technology changes our society and our lives.
However, it looks like that technology will also be the one that will destroy the music scene. Downloading songs from the internet drives a lot of musicians and record staffs unemployed because albums do not sell anymore. Of course there are singers who still continue to sell their albums but not that many as before. Apart from this, musicians are also the victim of piracy. How many copies of pirated CDs and DVDs of Mariah Carey has been sold? Who cares?! She's "Mariah" already! But what about the artists who are struggling to make a name for themselves?! Tell me, what will happen to them? They are going to struggle forever to make it big in an entertainment industry threatened by pirates who are not even as adorable as Captain Jack Sparrow. Before buying a pirated album and downloading a song, think again. Are we in the road to self-destruction?

Back in 2004 when the MP3 and digital music hype was just starting to gain prominence, Coke launched its own music store. Its site quickly rose as UK's leading music and MP3 download site because of its promise of free music downloads for Coke customers. However, its market and customer size started dwindling in number with the advent of iTunes, Wippit, and other music download sites. Now, the inevitable has come; MyCokeMusic.com has closed shop. Its closing will become official on July 31.
I used to remember buying Coke and asking for vouchers for downloads. The store offered good music for something that's free. Pity it has to close after losing to its competitors. But the softdrink giant don't need a music store anymore. According to a post in their website, the store was only put up in the first place so Coke can reach the emerging market of digital music enthusiasts. The store also exclusively carried their own range of catchy Coke jingles and other popular hits. Besides, as they put up shop in the early days of digital music, there wasn't really a way to offer their own music besides putting up their own store. They attribute this to the limited number of music sites.
I don't really see Coke's need to sell or make its own music. Celebrities and artists are running after Coke and seeking to be its model. They even let Coke use their songs as jingle or a part of the commercial. I think that other than losing face in front of their digital music competitors, Coke lost nothing else.

Few bands treat Supersuckers as influence because they want to be known as serious musicians. Supersuckers always stray on the less serious side of music even though they've been rocking and playing for over two decades. I like the Supersuckers's music despite the frequent criticisms about the music as "trash." The Supersuckers know this but instead of getting pissed, they acknowledge it. Even vocalist Eddie Spaghetti admits to this fact; he says that their music is fun and comic, unlike the usual rock music stuff of angst and hatred. They figure there are so many bad things going on and many people griping about these that a change of air is needed. That's why they are playing their music; they are trying to lighten things up. For me, that's a better way of looking at things: taking them lightly and making them funny. A lot of people can be saved from insanity if they just try this.
For all other Supersuckers fans out there, the Supersuckers released a new album called "Pain". Pain is a downloadable EP containing six songs which is available from the band's website. This shows that even if they do not worry about having fans and being respected in the changing rock world, they are know the changing music scene. They are here, and continuously providing fans the funnier side of music.

Do you know Steve Jobs? He is the man behind the meteoric success iTunes and iPods are experiencing now. Buoyed by his success, the record and entertainment industries are no more than putty in his hands. I am not a big Jobs fan or whatever; in fact, quite the contrary. I admire his genius and business acumen, but no more than that. In fact, I am starting not to like him at all. If you knew why, I am sure you will want to strangle him too.
Steve Jobs pressures the movie industry to raise the costs of downloaded movies. Through Apple, Jobs continuously proves that $0.99 for a downloaded song works with over a billion downloads worldwide. Even $1.99-worth music and TV shows sport over 15M dollars in sales. I know, that the rates on these things are pretty cheap, and it does not matter to me if Jobs push for a $3 flat rate for movie downloads. But the businessman that he is, he is pushing for $9.99 unit price for a downloaded movie. How sick is that? That is almost the cost of one DVD. With the DRM stuff going on, these downloads are sure to play only on one medium. Do not expect the entertainment people to back out, they express support for this Jobs project.
I think that moves like this only heightens the need for cheap downloads, hence, the piracy. Jobs is not helping anyone but himself. The equation is pretty simple: higher download prices translate to more people looking for cheap entertainment. Cheap entertainment begets more pirates. More pirates mean the ruin of the entertainment enterprise. C'mon, don't people realize that? I will not be surprise if a fresh iPod with better visuals makes its appearance on the market.

Upcoming musicians and young rock bands like Last Conservative are traversing a different route other than the one bands of the last decades took. They have given up on looking for a band manager, or a popular record to sign them up. Instead, these musicians are jumping onto the techie bandwagon and are marketing, advertising themselves, and selling their own music through the internet. Supported by Robby Takac, the bassist of Goo Goo Dolls and founder of Music Is Art, these bands get a headstart by exploiting the possibilities of new technology such as downloadable digital music, digital music players, and Internet programs. This way, the new bands can form a loyal fan base without their profits getting cut by entertainment middlemen. Their target? The high school crowd. I think it's because these kids neither have enough money to buy real concert tickets or high-priced CDs.
These are smart marketing ideas since kids nowadays are almost perpetually in tune to their PCs, iPods and MP3s. Truly the fastest and easiest way to connect to them is through the use of these mediums. Also, the kids can access the band easily since these bands usually perform at school functions without prohibitive ticket prices. MySpace.com plays a part in this scheme because it enable the kids to connect with the other fans and even the band members. Hence, this idea serves two purpose: helping the new bands get stable and giving the kids their music fix.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) called for the shutdown of The Pirate Bay, a massive source of unauthorized digital content. The BitTorrent tracker Pirate Bay previously commanded an immense level of traffic and interest, and regularly thumbed its nose at agencies like the MPAA and RIAA. But recently, the MPAA collaborated with Swedish authorities to raid several Pirate Bay facilities and seized multiple servers and various individuals. MPAA filed a complaint in Sweden in November 2004 and the film industry had since worked vigorously with Swedish and US government officials in Sweden to shut the illegal site down.
Swedish law enforcers executed search warrants and raids at 10 different locations which resulted in three arrests and the preclusion of millions of users trading up to 2 million illegal files simultaneously. The Pirate Bay website is currently down, though anti-copyright organization Piratbyran has posted an update on a separate blog, but just prior to its shutdown, The Pirate Bay reportedly offered a total of 157,000 illegal files, including blockbuster releases Da Vinci Code, Mission Impossible: III, and The Poseidon Adventure. The Pirate Bay ranked as the 479th most visited internet destination in the world according to Alexa.com.

I'm sure you have already updated your MySpace profile and posted a video on it. At the moment, if you browse a few MySpace pages chances are some music will begin playing spontaneously. Having a soundtrack not only accentuates the overall presentation, it speaks volumes upon the personality of the MySpace user. Today, one startup is hoping to offer that same audio personality to a number of different internet destinations, including blogs, photo- and video-sharing sites, and social networking pages. The company, known as Sonific, will offer volumes of free music that can be posted "as quickly and easily as adding an image." I'm sure all of you MySpace-philiacs are drooling as we speak.
Sonific is the brainchild of music futurist Gerd Leonhard, who among other things is the author of The Future of Music, and the company has just rustled funding from a number of angels, and will soon position an invitation-only beta. Sonific has also brokered a deal with CDBaby which will allow members to easily spread their music across the web, and the weapon of choice will be the SongSpots player, which simply drops tunes into sites. Derek Sivers, founder and CEO of CDBaby, said many CDBaby artists are excited about the SongSpots player, bringing their music into all the previously-silent corners of the web. Sonific will represent thousands of artists who are all interested in promoting their music more deeply into the internet.
